Here are some photos of Triplets with Llamas in progress. My painting method starts with taking many photos of my subject, then sorting through them and choosing which ones to use in the composition.
After completing a drawing, I transfer it to the canvas using graphite. Then comes the first layer of paint which is straight out of the tube in a very thin layer, working dark to light. It is very important for me to establish the darkest darks first to help get the all important midtones correct and finally the lightest lights. The first layer underpainting is completed in small sections with the goal to, again most importantly, get the values correct, while using paint mixtures as close to the proper hue as possible. The second opaque layer further refines value, hue and edges.
